Everchanging Media

April 16, 2012 — Leave a comment

This is my personal website.  The theme that I am using is a my own child theme of Standard Theme by the guys at 8bit and it is powered by WordPress. I am currently using a Preview version of their upcoming 3rd major version of their flagship theme. The main reason (outside of always wanting the latest and greatest) that I am using the preview is because of the responsive design. Whether you are checking this out via your desktop (hopefully a Mac) or your iPhone or iPad, the site will be customized to your current screen size. The blog is set at full-width and it has widgetized footer. The image galleries are created using the built in WordPress Gallery support with the Fancybox plugin. I have made some small color tweaks here and there, but overall I love the way it looks out of the box.

Work Update

April 3, 2012 — Leave a comment

It’s been a while since I posted something. It has been pretty busy at both work and in personal life. I have been going to bed around midnight every night and waking up at 6:30 or earlier. I have to say, I do like waking up earlier, but I feel completely wiped by the end of the day. My wife Alyssa says she’s surprised that I haven’t gotten sick yet. I usually contract sinus infection when I run myself too thin for too long, but the only thing bothering me a some seasonal allergies.

It has been 3 months now since I left my startup job to go back to corporate America and I have to say, overall I’m really loving it. There are a few things that annoy me but things are mostly positive. Here’s some pros and cons:

Pros:

  • 40-45 hour work weeks
  • Timelines and Deadlines can easily be modified
  • Riding the bus
  • Helping implement Agile on the teams I work with
  • Helping implement JIRA and automate ticket creation

Cons:

  • Working on a PC
  • Corporate policies
  • Some people in positions because of seniority, not skill set
  • COBOL (but luckily I don’t have to write any)

There are some wins to talk about too. I did manage to secure myself a Mac to work on. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to migrate completely to it just yet, but I’m working on it. I have also started some initial work on the mobile front. I have started some initial development and have been watching the iTunes U Stanford videos as training and reference. I’m really excited about that because that area is really gaining some traction at work and I really think there will be a lot of potential to carve myself a new role. We will see how that goes.

On the personal front, I have been wrapping up a number of projects to give room to hopefully add some new ones. I am going to be updating my portfolio this week, so be looking for that. I also helped out a buddy and old roommate on a project of his. The site is Happy Birthday Nate and he’s hoping to raise funds for malaria nets for his 30th birthday. I helped him set up a form for others to sign up to also donate their birthday gifts as well and create a profile page for them to share. It’s a great cause, so be sure to check it out.
